Traveling to Uganda or other East African countries requires careful attention to visa regulations, as requirements can vary based on your nationality and travel plans. Please note that visa procurement is the sole responsibility of the traveler, and it’s essential to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from Uganda.

Important Notes on Visa Requirements

African countries often experience changes in visa policies due to political developments, so it’s crucial to verify the latest visa requirements before your trip. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, consult the local embassy, consulate, or a trusted visa service provider for each country you plan to visit.

If you’re traveling on one of our Overland Camping Safaris, your trip leader will confirm during the pre-departure meeting whether gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda is included in your itinerary. In such cases, applying for an East Africa Tourist Visa in advance through the Kenyan embassy is highly recommended, as this visa covers travel to both Uganda and Rwanda.

Uganda Visa Requirements

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Uganda. Passports from countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa are eligible for a visa valid for three months (or six months for multiple entries).

Important Update (as of October 14, 2021): It is no longer possible to obtain a Uganda visa upon arrival. All travelers must apply for their visas in advance before traveling to the country.

If you hold a passport from a different nationality, visit Project Visa for detailed information on visa requirements specific to Uganda.

Rwanda Visa Requirements

A visa is required for most nationalities traveling to Rwanda, including passport holders from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Rwanda has replaced its visa-on-arrival system with an online visa application process . Travelers must apply online at least three days before arriving in Rwanda. Payment is completed at the border upon entry.

East Africa Tourist Visa

If your travel plans include visiting Kenya, Uganda, and/or Rwanda, you may apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa , which grants multiple entries into these three countries. This visa is valid for 90 days and costs USD $100.

The East Africa Tourist Visa can be applied for in advance or obtained upon arrival at airports in Kenya, Uganda, or Rwanda. However, if you’re applying in advance, ensure you apply through the embassy of the first country you’ll be visiting.

For example, if you’re traveling on one of our Overland Safaris, your journey will begin in Kenya, so you must apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa through the Kenyan Embassy.

Additional Tips for Visa Procurement

  1. Plan Ahead: Visa processing times can vary, so submit your application well in advance of your travel dates.
  2. Double-Check Requirements: Ensure you meet all documentation requirements, such as proof of accommodation, return flight tickets, and sufficient funds.
  3. Verify Entry Points: Some visas may specify approved entry points, so confirm this when planning your itinerary.
  4. Stay Updated: Visa policies can change without notice, so recheck requirements closer to your departure date.

By staying informed and preparing in advance, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience to Uganda and the broader East African region. Safe travels!
